Overview

We are pleased to introduce you to the Department of Hematology and Blood Purification Therapy at Tokyo Women's Medical University. Our department has been a pioneer of renal replacement therapy in Japan, and has been involved in renal failure treatment since the early days of the field. We are proud of the long tradition and history of our department, as evidenced by the fact that there are many doctors and staff members throughout Japan who have received training, clinical and research studies at our department. Our motto is "multidisciplinary care for all patients with renal diseases" in our practice, education, and research, and multidisciplinary care means to bring together all available knowledge, skills, and feelings. Based on this motto, as a member of the Comprehensive Kidney Disease Center, we are expanding our spectrum from conservative chronic kidney disease to transplantation and medical engineering.
Currently, together with Nephrology, Nephrology Surgery, Urology, Nephrology Pediatrics, and Clinical Engineering, it is a part of the Comprehensive Medical Center for Kidney Disease, with an annual dialysis treatment record of approximately 200 outpatients and 1,200 inpatients. With 48 dialysis beds and three shifts, it is the largest dialysis unit attached to a university hospital, and is an actual clinical, educational, and research facility for dialysis therapy (including peritoneal dialysis) and other extracorporeal circulations in general.
Our dialysis room is located on the second floor of Ward 1, and is equipped with spacious beds with ample space between them, not only in the inpatient booths where patients need to be moved by stretcher, but also in the outpatient department, allowing for advanced medical care.
In addition to hemodialysis, we have an apheresis unit and provide apheresis therapy for various intractable and acute diseases including plasma exchange, which is related to renal transplantation. Thus, we are equipped to provide both dialysis and apheresis therapy.
We are committed not only to the alternative treatment of renal failure, but also to the challenge of overcoming renal-related diseases in cooperation and collaboration with patients and the various departments in this field in a broad and interactive manner.
