Clinical examinations are one type of medical information, but their role is increasing, and it is becoming impossible to provide medical care without them. Furthermore, with the development of new examination items and method technologies, information of clinical examination is becoming more sophisticated and voluminous. Under these circumstances, it is essential for physicians to obtain more objective medical information , when and which examination should be done, and how to diagnose the reported results and apply them to medical care and treatment. Our department strives to train students to acquire basic knowledge of clinical laboratory testing, such as the significance of tests, principles of testing methods, causes of errors, and interpretation of results, so that they will have the ability to apply their knowledge to clinical practice. In the clinical field, we acquired ISO 15189 certification in 2010, and we cooperate daily with physicians, laboratory technologists, and departments in related departments to provide highly accurate rapid tests in a safe, accurate, and prompt 24-hour laboratory testing system. In terms of research, we are also a central facility for the standardization of clinical laboratory tests and the establishment of reference values, as well as for various types of surveys. We are also involved in the investigation of new laboratory test items and technological development. We are also engaged in the training of clinical laboratory specialized physicians as a basic area specialist of Japanese Medical Specialty Board.
In student education, we are conducting Segment 4: Laboratory testing (biochemistry) lecture, Segment 5: Nutrition and metabolism case study (general laboratory testing) lecture, Segment 8: Lecture and basic clinical practice, and Segment 9: Lecture and selective practice.
In the lectures, students learn the basics of general laboratory testing, hematology and biochemistry testing, and immune serology, including the basics of specimen handling, precision and accuracy of laboratory testing, and the concept of reference values, as well as the indications for testing, testing methods, and analysis of test results according to the grade. In practical training, students are asked questions and participate in discussions on the quantification of components and evaluation of measurement accuracy using simple equipment, practical training using POCT with samples, microscopic examination of blood and urine samples, and examination of autoantibody fluorescence images, all of which are more clinically relevant. In addition, reverse CPC is used to develop clinical application skills.
● Investigation of diabetes-related indicators; international comparison of HbA1c international standardization, HbA1c national survey and standardized control, and standardized glycated albumin (GA), estimated average blood glucose (eAG).
● Analysis of new clinical test items and development of new techniques; analysis of factors that cause variation in biochemical markers of atherosclerosis and remnant lipoprotein cholesterol.
● Establishment of a management system for clinical laboratories; automation of batch processing of multiple specimens, and improvement of data accuracy by utilizing IT technology.
● Collaboration with other departments and clinical laboratories; performance evaluation of POCT equipment for HbA1c measurement, basic performance evaluation of POCT glucose measurement equipment, determination of therapeutic effect of DPP4 inhibitors by 1,5AG
● Diabetes and Heart Disease; Study of the association between left ventricular morphology and biomarkers in diabetic patients
