Overview

The Department of Hematology of Tokyo Women's Medical University has been practicing as an independent hematology department since 1973, ahead of other universities. The first professor was Dr. Tamotsu Miyazaki, and the Department of Hematology was established in 1991 with Dr. Hideaki Mizoguchi as the first chief professor. Dr. Toshiko Motoji was appointed as the second chief professor in 2004, and Dr. Junji Tanaka was appointed as the third chief professor in April 2013. The hematology department has 34 beds, including 9 sterile private rooms. Our Department targets a wide range of diseases from non-malignant diseases such as aplastic anemia and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura to malignant hematopoietic diseases such as leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, malignant lymphoma, and myeloma, and actively provides chemotherapy, molecular targeted therapy, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Since hematologic diseases are also systemic diseases, we aim to train physicians with comprehensive medical skills through the treatment of hematologic diseases.

Research Details

Hematologic diseases, including hematopoietic malignancies, have seen remarkable advances in diagnosis and treatment. This has been brought about by a great deal of clinical and basic research that has been accumulated to date. However, there are still many intractable hematologic diseases, and many challenges remain. In our department, each physician conducts research based on his or her own interests and on the following themes
1. The role of NK cells in hematopoietic cell transplantation
2. Analysis of immune response in hematopoietic cell transplantation
3. Treatment of hematopoietic tumors and immune response
4. Research on development of new cell therapy
5. Elucidation of the clinical significance of genetic abnormalities in hematopoietic malignancies
6. Elucidation of molecular pathogenesis of myelodysplastic syndromes
7. Pathophysiology of myeloproliferative tumors
8. Search for prognostic factors in malignant lymphoma
