Effective October 2018, the Department of Hygiene and Public Health (I), Hygiene and Public Health (II), and Medical and Hospital Administration merged to form the Department of Hygiene and Public Health. The Division of Environmental and Occupational Medicine conducts education, research, and social activities in the areas of environmental and occupational medicine and healthcare and hospital administration.
A variety of physicochemical factors exist in the environment and affect our health. In recent years, in addition to global environmental problems such as global warming and ozone depletion, health effects caused by chemicals to which we can be exposed in our daily lives, such as toxic metals, dioxins, persistent organic pollutants, volatile organic compounds and fine particulate matter, have become an issue. In industrial settings, there is also concern about the health effects of work involving the handling of hazardous chemicals such as metals and organic solvents, as well as the work environment and conditions. Our Division conducts education, research, and social activities in the fields of environmental and occupational medicine with the aim of preventing the onset of diseases and disorders caused by various harmful factors in the living and working environment, maintaining and promoting good health, and improving the quality of life. In basic research, we are elucidating the effects of environmental stresses such as toxic metals on living organisms at the cellular and molecular level as well as in model animals, focusing on signal transduction pathways. As practical research, we are also working on understanding the causes of occupational diseases and their countermeasures.
Japan's medical science has made remarkable progress, including the discovery of iPS cells and the PD-1 molecule. On the other hand, from the perspective of "healthcare," the current situation in Japan does not allow for optimism, as the increasing health expenditure is putting pressure on the nation's finances. However, even under these circumstances, we are requested to pool our wisdom and build an appropriate medical care delivery system to protect people's health. In addition to dealing with practical issues of medical institutions such as patient safety, management, and working environment of healthcare professionals, we are engaged in education and research on health economics, social security, and patient safety, as well as policy issues extracted from the perspective of community healthcare, continuity of care, social insurance systems, and national finance. We also conduct practical activities to promote hospital management and improvement of the quality of healthcare.
We conduct lectures and practical training in hygiene and public health
as pre-graduate education, in accordance with the Model Core Curriculum
for Medical Education, focusing on the core subjects "Environment
and Health, Disease and Disability" and "Social Systems and Health,
Medicine and Welfare" in the fourth year of medical school (segment
7). In the "Environment and Health, Disease, and Disability"
course, we aim to let students to be able to prevent the onset of diseases
and disorders caused by various harmful factors in their living and working
environment, maintain and improve their health, and improve their quality
of life as future physicians. In addition to "Tutorial," "Practical
Study of Sincerity and Love", "Research Project", "Independent
Elective Practicum" and "Law (elective) ". We conduct "Practicum
in Medicine, Medical Care and Society" in cooperation with other social
medicine departments.
In the Department of Nursing, we conduct Public Health (3rd year) and Epidemiology
(4th year). In addition, we also conduct the biomedical curriculum (environmental
and industrial hygiene) and the Medical Association Industrial Physician
Workshop in our university.
Human Origins (Segment 1), Research Project (Segment 6), Environment and Health, Disease, Disability (Segment 7), Social System and Health, Medical, Welfare (Segment 7), Medicine, Medical Care and Social Practice (Segment 7), Independent Elective Practice (Segment 9), Occupational Health, Environmental Health, Food Health (Segment 10 area 12), Social Security System and Health Economics (Segment 10 area 12), Practical Study of "Sincerity and Love" (Segments 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8), Tutorial (Segments 1, 3), Law A and Law B (elective), etc.
In Basic research, we aim to elucidate the response and adaptation mechanisms to environmental stress by elucidating the biological effects of environmental factors, especially metals, neurotoxic substances and fine particulate matter, at the molecular and cellular levels. In particular, we are investigating the toxicological significance of activation of signaling pathways involved in the determination of "cell survival and death" and fluctuations in the expression of stress response genes such as molecular chaperones via the endoplasmic reticulum, an intracellular organelle, using a molecular biological approach. We have also started research on environmental stress response using zebrafish and nematodes as model animals. As practical research, we are also working to understand the causes of and countermeasures against occupational diseases, with the goal of returning the results to society.
We conduct research on hospital management, patient safety, medical ethics, healthcare worker labor, medical law, and healthcare policy.
