In 2020 we started a new organization called The Center for Medical and
Nursing Education. It includes faculty members belonging to the medical
school or the nursing school, who specialize in Medicine-Nursing Education,
Basic Science, and Liberal Arts Education. This center is a virtual organization,
comprising the members from several special fields and the facility called
Skills Laboratory, which is originally from the Education Center for Integrated
Medicine, which has been serving students as well as hospital staff members.
The Center is in charge of a wide range of educational and other events
in medical and nursing schools. The Center is intended to contribute to
every aspect of academic development. It covers supporting the online
lectures under the COVID-19 pandemic and ‘Active Learning’ education, conducting
examinations including the entrance examinations, providing educational
assessments based on the statistical analysis of the students’ scores
for a constant improvement of our educational methods, organizing various
school events, and planning and management of FD and SD.
The TWMU Nursing School originated from the Vocational School for Midwives and Nurses founded in 1930 affiliated with Tokyo Women’s Medical Professional School and has a history spanning 92 years. The Nursing School moved to Nishiogu, Arakawa-ku in 1968. Approximately 3,000 students have graduated from the school since it became the Vocational School for Midwives and Nurses, and they have been playing active roles as nurses in various fields. The Nursing School moved to its new building on December 1, 2021, ahead of the medical center’s move to the new TWMU Adachi Medical Center building that had also been completed. The Nursing School marked its 91st year in 2021. Both faculty and students are continuing to pursue academic and practical training with a renewed determination under the school’s admission policy, curriculum policy, and diploma policy, which were developed based on the TWMU’s founding spirit and the university philosophy of “Sincerity and Compassion.”
The TWMU’s University Library functions as a library, media lab, and museum,
and consists of the Main Library, Adachi Library (merged the Medical Center
Library and TWMU Nursing School Library), Yachiyo Medical Center Library,
Media Lab, University Archives, and the TWMU Society Office.
As a university library supporting education, research, learning, and clinical
practice, the library holds not only paper books but also electronic materials
such as electronic journals, electronic books, and literature databases.
The Main Library moved into the new school building in April 2020, and
is used as a place for learning, equipped with quiet reading rooms and
academic commons suitable for discussions.
In the YOSHIOKA Yayoi Memorial Room, the personal history of the founder,
YOSHIOKA Yayoi, and the history of Tokyo Women’ s Medical University are
exhibited with a visual display. The founder’s words and writings, favorite
goods, materials showing the interaction between the founder and alumni,
and materials used at the time of the Tokyo Women's Medical Professional
School are on exhibit. The messages from the founder, the university philosophy,
the active roles played by alumni, and the contributions of today’ s professionals
illustrate the progression of women’ s medical education from its beginning
right up to the present day. Against the historical backdrop that TWMU
is the only women’s university in Japan to o?ffer medical education, there
is a corner in the Memorial Room which introduces not only the history
of our university, but also our pioneers of medical and nursing education
in Japan.
There is also a space in the Memorial Room where we can see elegant tiles
and round windows which once decorated the building near the entrance of
the Building No. 1.
In 2004, the postgraduate training became mandatory. In response to this policy change, the Postgraduate Training Center opened in the Tokyo Women’s Medical University Hospital. Every year, about 30 junior residents participate in the clinical training given at the Center. Owing to the wide lineup of clinical departments and many supervising doctors of our hospital, and the training covers a wide variety of cares, from the primary care or medical care for diseases frequently seen in daily practice, to advanced medical care requiring higher expertise. Moreover, after the 2-year junior residential training period, our university hospital also provides training courses for senior residents aiming at achieving the specialist certificates. In this way, our junior and senior residents can choose high-quality training programs in accordance with their future perspectives at the Postgraduate Training Center.
The TWMU Career Development Center for Medical Professionals not only
provides support for continuous career and safety net for women physicians/nurses
and other medical professionals, but also conducts activities aiming at
the society where women medical professionals can play lifelong active
roles and gain significant achievements through the development/promotion
of career as medical professionals and nurturing leaderships. Activities
at this University were given the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Women's
Empowerment Award in 2017. The proportion of women to all professors reached
31.1% as of July 1, 2020.
